Actor Sophia Bush and her wife, soccer player Ashlyn Harris, are using their platforms to “fight for LGBTQ justice.”
The couple has officially joined the board of directors for the Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest LGBTQ+ advocacy group.
Harris, a two-time World Cup Champion and Olympian, announced her newest commitment to social media Thursday. “It’s not just a role,” she wrote. “[I]t’s a commitment to fight for LGBTQ+ justice and equality with everything I’ve got.”
“I look forward to strengthening our ability to continue the fight against discrimination and systemic disparities in all its forms to ensure full equality for EVERYONE in our community,” she continued. “It’s deeply important to me to raise my kids in a safe, inclusive place and this feels like a step in the right direction.”
Bush, known for her role in One Tree Hill, shared her own sentiment on Instagram Thursday night, echoing her wife’s commitment to the cause.
“I am so honored to work alongside this incredible team,” she wrote. “To follow in the footsteps of the leaders who have come before me, and who have fought tooth and nail for our rights.”
This isn’t her first experience working with the Human Rights Campaign. Ten years ago, Bush says she worked with a “major brand” to design a shirt benefiting the HRC.
“Nothing has ever felt more right or more fated,” she said. “…This announcement is fresh, but the history for me? A long time coming.”
In a release, the Human Rights Campaign announced a total of eight new board members, including Harris and Bush, this week.
“These exceptional leaders bring a wealth of experience, passion and knowledge to our Boards of Directors, and I am thrilled by the opportunity to work closely with them in the years ahead,” said HRC President Kelley Robinson.
