GO-lympic Recap: Rebeca Andrade, Simone Biles, and Jordan Chiles Create First All-Black Podium in Gymnastics

August 6, 2024

Plus: USA Clinches Bronze in 3x3 Basketball, Cindy Ngamba Clinches The First Medal for the Refugee Olympic Team, and more.

USA Clinches Bronze in 3×3 Basketball

Despite Team USA’s 32-year dominance in basketball, 3×3 basketball is a different story. During the Tokyo Olympics, USA won gold in both regulation basketball and 3×3. This year, USA had a tough time building chemistry on the 3×3 team as they weren’t given a lot of time to practice before the games. However, Rhyne Howard, Cierra Burdick, Dearica Hamby, and Hailey Van Lith came together when it counted and won bronze for Team USA.

Rebeca Andrade, Simone Biles, and Jordan Chiles Create First All-Black Podium in Gymnastics

Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade and Team USA’s Simone Biles and Jordan Chiles have been cheering each other on throughout the entire games. In the floor event, Andrade just barely beat out Biles for the gold to become the most decorated Brazilian in Olympic history. Biles and Chiles honored Andrade’s performance by bowing to her on the podium.

Cindy Ngamba Clinches The First Medal for the Refugee Olympic Team

Cindy Ngamba left Cameroon when she was 11 years old and was granted refugee status in 2021 in the UK because she could be jailed in Cameroon for her queer identity. She was the flag bearer for this year’s Refugee Olympic Team, which was formed in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. The midweight boxer has made it to the semifinals where she is guaranteed a medal. On Friday night, the world will find out which medal she’ll be taking home.

Polish Speed Climber Aleksandra Mirosław Broke Her Own World Record Record — Twice

Polish speed climber Aleksandra Mirosław was locked into the qualifying round and literally flying past her competitors. She broke her own world record not just once, but twice in two different runs. Needless to say, she’ll be moving on to the quarterfinals on Wednesday, with the semi-finals and finals happening on the same day.

USA’s Valerie Allman Defends Her Discus Olympic Championship

After winning gold in Tokyo, Valerie Allman returned for another medal. She was previously a professional dancer, but she also threw discus starting in high school. Her best throw in this year’s Olympics was almost two meters farther than silver medalist Bin Feng of China — in fact, all of Allman’s non-foul throws beat Feng’s best. The dancer in the discus ring is bringing home another gold for USA.

USA’s Caroline Marks Wins Gold in Surfing

Team USA’s Caroline Marks is hanging ten with gold hanging on her neck. The 22-year-old Marks of Team USA finished with a 10.50 and Brazil’s Tatiana Weston-Webb a 10.33, a mere 0.17 points separating gold from silver. This is the second straight Olympic gold in that category for American surfers.
