On March 26 and 27, the U.S. Supreme Court will consider two cases challenging the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and California’s Proposition 8. Marriage equality advocates are organizing massive rallies to drum up public support for the right of gay and lesbian Americans to marry and receive the same benefits as everyone else.
An ABC News/Washington Post poll released last week revealed a stunning 58 percent of Americans support same-sex marriage, the highest proportion ever. Among young people 18 to 29, 81 percent support it.
Momentum is on our side, but the Supreme Court’s ruling on whether gay and lesbian couples deserve equal rights is far from certain. Add your voice to the chorus for change at the national rally, organized by a coalition of LGBT groups under the United for Marriage banner, on the steps of the Supreme Court on March 26 and 27. If you can’t make it to D.C., join the New York City march and rally beginning at the Stonewall Inn on Sunday, March 24, at 1pm. Dozens of LGBT organizations, political groups and ordinary New Yorkers will march from Stonewall, the historic site of the gay rights movement’s origin, to Washington Square Park for a rally.
