Everything We Know About The Foiled Anti-LGBTQ Terror Plot At Lady Gaga’s Brazil Concert
The biggest show of Gaga’s career nearly became a target of hate.
Lady Gaga’s record-breaking concert at Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana Beach was a triumphant celebration of music, unity, and LGBTQ pride, drawing over 2 million fans for the biggest show of her career. The event unfolded as a vibrant, joy-filled spectacle, with emotional performances and a crowd that radiated love and energy. But as we’ve now learned, authorities had quietly thwarted a planned terror attack targeting the LGBTQ community, making the concert’s success all the more extraordinary.
Here’s everything we know.
A Plot Born of Hate
Brazilian police arrested two individuals and investigated a network of suspects in connection with the plan, which officials say was fueled by anti-LGBTQ ideology. The alleged plot involved using Molotov cocktails and improvised explosives, coordinated through social media campaigns designed to radicalize youth.
“They were clearly saying that they were planning an attack at Lady Gaga’s concert motivated by sexual orientation,” said Felipe Cury, secretary of the Rio de Janeiro police, during a press conference on May 4, according to the Associated Press.
The group allegedly encouraged minors to carry out attacks in a bid for viral notoriety. Rio Police Chief Luiz Lima stated the perpetrators had disseminated hate speech and violent content online “aimed at gaining notoriety in order to attract more viewers, more participants — most of them teenagers, many of them children.”

Authorities linked the group to broader extremist networks promoting violence and self-harm as a form of social bonding. According to the Justice Ministry, the suspects even identified themselves as members of Gaga’s fanbase, aka Little Monsters, to infiltrate queer online spaces.
The police operation, dubbed “Operation Fake Monster,” involved coordinated raids across multiple states, including Rio de Janeiro, Mato Grosso, Rio Grande do Sul, and São Paulo. Electronic devices were seized, and digital evidence reportedly pointed to a “collective challenge” encouraging coordinated violence for online fame.
No Warning, No Panic
Despite the severity of the alleged threat, Lady Gaga’s team said they were not informed of the plot ahead of or during the concert.
“We learned about this alleged threat via media reports this morning,” a spokesperson for Gaga said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “Prior to and during the show, there were no known safety concerns, nor any communication from the police or authorities to Lady Gaga regarding any potential risks.”
Authorities later explained their decision to keep the investigation under wraps: they feared that going public with the plot would cause unnecessary panic and possibly interfere with the operation.
Lady Gaga’s team emphasized that they had worked closely with law enforcement throughout the planning and execution of the show, and were confident in the security measures in place. Local officials had deployed 5,000 security agents, facial recognition technology, and surveillance protocols across Copacabana Beach in anticipation of the massive turnout.
A Night of Joy — and a Near Miss
That turnout, estimated between 2.1 and 2.5 million, packed Rio’s iconic beach with fans who had waited all day in the hot sun, perched in trees, and camped out to be part of the moment. Gaga kicked off the show at 10:10 p.m. with “Bloody Mary,” and moved through a setlist that spanned her career, including “Poker Face” and “Alejandro.” While performing “Abracadabra,” she delivered a dress reveal, with her new look featuring the colors of the Brazilian flag.
“Tonight, we’re making history. Thank you for making history with me,” Gaga told the crowd, as quoted in local reports.
The next day, she showed off the dress again and posted an emotional tribute to her fans on Instagram: “Nothing could prepare me for the feeling I had during last night’s show — the absolute pride and joy I felt singing for the people of Brazil. The sight of the crowd during my opening songs took my breath away. Your heart shines so bright, your culture is so vibrant and special, I hope you know how grateful I am to have shared this historical moment with you.”
Thanks to quiet action behind the scenes, what could’ve been a tragedy became a night to remember for all the right reasons.
