Dove Cameron Says She “Hated” Having To Come Out After Being Accused Of Queerbaiting

Dove Cameron performs at the NYLON House on April 11, 2025 in Palm Springs, California.

Dove Cameron opens up about accusations of queerbaiting and fully embracing her queer identity.

Dove Cameron, known for her roles in Disney Channel’s Liv and Maddie and the Descendants film series, recently addressed the challenges she faced regarding her sexual identity. In a candid conversation on the “Armchair Expert” podcast, Cameron expressed her frustration over being accused of queerbaiting, which she said pressured her into publicly coming out as bisexual in 2020, which she “hated.”

“Even within the queer community, people are very heavy on labels,” she said. At the time, she wasn’t ready for that on a public scale. Despite being open about her sexuality in her personal life, she felt compelled to clarify her identity publicly due to the backlash she received after teasing her song “We Belong” with an emoji of two women kissing.

Cameron’s experience mirrors those of other artists like Billie Eilish and Kehlani, who have also navigated the complexities of coming out under public scrutiny. Eilish revealed her attraction to women during a Variety interview, later expressing surprise that her comments were perceived as a coming-out moment. She emphasized the challenges of societal expectations and the pressure to label oneself.  Similarly, Kehlani discussed their journey to embracing their lesbian identity, highlighting the privilege of being “straight-presenting” and the importance of coming out without external pressures.

In today’s sociopolitical climate, where LGBTQ+ rights are both celebrated and contested, Cameron’s story underscores the importance of authenticity and embracing oneself completely. Her openness contributes to the broader conversation about the nuances of sexual identity and the challenges celebrities face when navigating the complexities of public perception.

Cameron’s musical journey reflects her personal growth. Her 2022 hit “Boyfriend” became a queer anthem, resonating with many for its candid portrayal of same-sex attraction. She continues to explore themes of self-acceptance and personal growth in her music, with her latest single, “Too Much,” delving into these topics within a techno-pop soundscape.

As public figures like Cameron, Eilish, and Kehlani share their stories, they pave the way for more inclusive and understanding conversations about sexual identity. Their experiences highlight the importance of allowing individuals the space to define themselves on their terms, free from external pressures or expectations.

In embracing her truth, Dove Cameron not only reclaims her narrative but also offers inspiration to others navigating their own paths. Her journey serves as a reminder that authenticity, though sometimes challenging, will always be a powerful force for collective empowerment.
