Crazy 8: Our Year in Review

Marriage Equality The battle for same-gender marriage raged on these past months, with Maine voters echoing the 2008 decision of California voters on Proposition 8 and choosing to take away marriage rights that had previously been given to gays and lesbians. On the upside, Vermont, Iowa, New Hampshire and the District of Columbia all passed laws allowing same-gender marriage in the past year. Connecticut and Massachusetts already have formalized gay marriage provisions.

Chastity, Now Chaz

Chastity Bono, adult daughter of entertainers Sonny and Cher, came out as a transman, declaring that he had always felt more like a heterosexual man than a lesbian and requesting that he be referred to as Chaz. He shared his story with the nation, according to his publicist, because: “It is Chaz’s hope that his choice to transition will open the hearts and minds of the public regarding this issue, just as his coming out did.” Mother Cher stood by Chaz’s side and pledged her eternal support.
