100 Women We Love Class of 2010
A Houston, Texas native, Annise Parker has remained close to her roots. She was sworn in as the 61st mayor of Houston in January, becoming only the second woman and first openly gay person to hold that office. She graduated from Rice University and worked for two decades in the oil and gas industry, with 18 of those years spent at the Houston-based Mosbacher Energy Company. For ten years, she co-owned Inklings, a Houston-based independent gay bookstore. Parker was involved in Houston politics for several years prior to becoming mayor, serving six years as a member of the City Council and one six-year term as Houston City Controller. -CB

Julie Goldman
Seriously funny comedian Julie Goldman, a cast member on LOGO’s side-splitting Big Gay Sketch Show, received a MAC Award in 2007 for Major Stand-up Comic–Female and a NewNowNext Award in 2008 for Brink of Fame Comic. She’s co-starring, with writing partner Brandy Howard, in the new web series Julie & Brandy in Your Box Office on Autostraddle.com. Tired of the lack of roles for butch women, she is working on a feature film with Howard called The Nicest Thing. “I love romantic comedies and this would be the first one that I could watch as an audience member and see myself, a butch-ish woman, reflected on the screen,” Goldman says. “This movie is the first of its kind, and we just need to find a groundbreaking visionary to join us to get this movie made.” Hint hint, investors: they hope to start shooting in 2011. -CB
