100 Women We Love 2006

Meet the class of 2006

Riki Anne Wilchins

In the course of only one decade, activist Wilchins helped gain protection against transgender discrimination in 75 cities, seven states, 118 major corporations, 65 colleges and almost a third of Congress. “This is what quiet, but dramatic, social change looks like, and it reflects just how deeply the dialogue around gender rights has finally moved into the mainstream,” said Wilchins. This author of several queer theory tomes founded Transsexual Menace, and now works for gender and human rights as executive director of GenderPAC. She works to ensure that communities and classrooms are safe places for all children, saying, “How can we hope to ever really combat homophobia, sexism or transphobia unless we first address issues of gender? The challenge is getting people to recognize that gender rights are human rights, and they are for all of us.”
