The internet got itself into a tizzy over a pairing no one had on their bingo cards: Christine Baranski and King Princess. After being photographed hand-in-hand at a couple of red carpet events and posting cozy snaps from the reopening of Mamma Mia! on Broadway, the veteran actress and the 26-year-old musician became the latest celebrity “are they or aren’t they” obsession. King Princess even threw gasoline on the fire with an Instagram caption reading simply, “#loveislove.” Fans immediately flooded the comments with knowing winks, jokes, and comparisons to Sarah Paulson and Holland Taylor.
Then came the celebrity stir. Hacks star Hannah Einbinder joined in by reposting a photo of the two with the cheeky line, “do i even need to say it.” King Princess volleyed back, playfully suggesting a “double date.” The internet, predictably, went wild. Within hours, major outlets were dissecting their supposed May-December romance and emphasizing the forty-seven-year age gap, as if friendship between women of different generations is too strange to stand on its own.

But here’s the thing: Baranski and King Princess have already addressed this dynamic directly. In a conversation for Interview Magazine back in May, the two joked about giving people “something to talk about,” while also making clear that what they really share is a deep and surprising bond. “We sat at the bar, ordered our martinis, and suddenly we’re talking about our grandmothers who deeply affected and influenced our lives. I think that’s where we profoundly bonded,” Baranski recalled of her Nine Perfect Strangers costar.
Talk, people have. But what’s gotten lost in the noise is what’s really on display: an unlikely friendship forged across age and career lines. Baranski calls King Princess “possibly the greatest gift.” King Princess calls Baranski a mentor. All we see are two women enjoying each other’s company and having a laugh at our expense.
Sometimes, people are just friends.
