Jeffrey Epstein Exploited Same-Sex Marriage To Get His Girlfriend A Green Card
The marriage took place in New York in 2013.
Jeffrey Epstein took advantage of the legalization of same-sex marriage to help his girlfriend stay in the country, according to a new report.
The New York Times recently released a profile of Dr. Karyna Shuliak, Epstein’s girlfriend and the last person he called prior to his 2019 suicide. The two were introduced in 2011 by a woman who was allegedly expected to recruit other women for Epstein.
Emails between the Epstein and Shuliak showed that she attempted to stop things from moving forward a few weeks later, around the time that he pled guilty to soliciting prostitution from a minor. Epstein, however, was persistent, and the relationship between the two grew.
Epstein eventually pulled some strings to help Shuliak get into Columbia to pursue dentistry. However, her student visa had expired back in 2010.
“I think its time you found an american girlfriend,” he told her in an email sent in March 2013. “same sex marriage will be the fastes [sic] way to green card. by far.”
Same-sex marriage hadn’t been legalized at a federal level by that point, but in New York, where Shuliak lived, it had been legal since 2011.
One of Epstein’s victims was chosen as Shuliak’s wife-to-be, and by October of 2013, the two were legally married. Shuliak’s pending deportation proceedings were dismissed not long after, and she was allowed to stay in the country.
None of this is brand new information. Earlier this year, the Democrats of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform released a report that dug into various times Epstein exploited the immigration system to traffic women. It mentioned that Shuliak’s wife—who she divorced one year after becoming a U.S. citizen in 2018—had been forced into the marriage and was “shocked” when she later found Shuliak’s deportation hearing was scheduled for just a few days after their wedding.
But The New York Times has brought new attention to Shuliak, who was Epstein’s girlfriend at the time of his death and now stands to inherit a portion of his estate.
