Team USA rugby sevens player Alev Kelter proved Paris really is the “City of Love” by getting down on one knee for her girlfriend, and fellow rugby player, Kathryn Treder on Monday.
The team had just snatched the bronze medal, with Kelter scoring the team’s first point and setting up the historic win. It was the first time an American sevens squad – men or women’s – won an Olympic medal.
To celebrate, the 33 year old popped the question at the Museum of Modern Art, receiving an enthusiastic ‘yes’ from Treder, who plays for the U.S. women’s XVs squad. The couple, both Alaskan natives, will be heading home with a medal and a ring!
The beautiful moment was caught on camera by U.S. park skateboarding champion Heimana Reynolds, who joked he had no experience with proposal photography but couldn’t pass up the chance to help.
“I am so thankful to Alev and the Kelter family for welcoming me in and trusting me to capture this once in a lifetime moment🖤 I am so happy for you guys,” Reynold wrote.
The moment was made even more special with some help from Kelter’s family, who was in town to cheer her on.
Kelter’s twin sister Deyra secretly passed the ring to Kelter from behind, while Treder unsuspectingly walked along. “Okay now that I’m done crying can we go back to the CRUCIAL part of this video where I hand off the ring with seamless precision,” she commented on the video.
Kelter’s 96-year-old grandmother Anneanne can be seen in the photos celebrating with the rest of the crowd.
Treder, 28, shared a few cute photos of herself and her new fiancée. “Alev, you’ve been grinding, fighting, and putting your head where people don’t want to put their feet,” she said. “Your hard work, dedication, and perseverance has payed off in the most incredible way.”
