Winona Ryder Clapped Back Against Homophobic High School Bully And The Internet Is Losing Its Mind

Homophobia can touch anyone. Even heterosexual movie stars.

The internet is losing its mind over Winona Ryder’s response to a former bully that asked for an autograph: Ryder told her to go f*ck herself. Though this incident happened years ago, and the widely shared quote was from a Harper’s Bazaar interview in 2000, everyone seems to love this story right now. A variation of the quote has over 5,000 retweets.

I don’t really have that many feelings about Winona Ryder, aside from my stereotypical damaged queer obsession with Girl Interrupted.

Wait, what were we talking about? Oh right.

So Winona was beat up in seventh grade for dressing like a boy. Anti-gay bullying and bullying based on gender presentation are a real, serious problem. It’s awesome to see the internet widely sharing a post acknowledging this type of abuse, and to hear a celebrity openly speaking about their experience being bullied. Although it’s heartening to see this post go viral, it’s sad to acknowledge that this type of violence still occurs today.

I suppose that this post is popular so many years later because Winona is on everyone’s mind. I know I’m the only lesbian/human person that isn’t watching Stranger Things but, like, Sex and The City reruns are just so comforting.
