Welcome to “Seven Minutes in Heaven,” GO Magazine’s brand new interview series that profiles a different queer lady each day, by asking her seven unique (and sometimes random) questions. Get to know the thoughts, feelings, and opinions of the groundbreaking, fierce forces-of-nature in the queer community.
“Lane Moore makes me feel like such a LOSER” I moaned to my coworkers this morning. “She’s a creative genius in every single area. WHAT AM I DOING WITH MY LIFE!” I quickly spiraled into darkness.
But you know what? I got over it within seconds because Moore is such a source of light and positive energy in our community that it’s impossible to feel even a semblance of resentment toward her for being so wildly talented, stylish, creative, funny, and productive.
Her music is moving, honest, and raw. Her writing is real, unpretentious and relatable. Her comedy is authentic, unique and hilarious. Her vision is both wild and precise. Even her wardrobe is enviable! All those super cute 90s-Rose-Mcgowan-chic-chokers and plaid-Cher-Horowitz-chic miniskirts and sexy-chic-crop-tops! I would sell my mother to raid her wardrobe (sorry, mum, but you’re into fashion like me, so you get it).
Most of all Lane Moore is kind. Sensitive. She goes after what she wants, but manages to always remain humble—she doesn’t have one ounce of opportunist energy. I can’t think of a better queer girl role model.
All that being said, we at GO Mag, are super proud to feature today’s “Seven Minutes In Heaven” with the one and only, singing, writing, joke-cracking, witty-tweeting, sparkly AF, ~Lane Moore~.
GO Magazine: Who are you and what do you do?
Lane Moore: I’m a stand-up comedian and host of the hit NYC comedy show Tinder Live!, which you can see at Littlefield in Brooklyn every month, and I’m also touring the country/world with it, so come see it! It’s the best. I’m the creator of Male Feminists of Tinder and Hotties of MTV’s Next (as seen on @midnight). I’ve written for The Onion, New Yorker Shouts & Murmurs, Cosmopolitan, Glamour, Playboy, GQ. I’m an actor (HBO’s GIRLS, Rooster Teeth), I’m the frontperson in BUST Magazine’s Best Band of 2015, It Was Romance, and we’re currently recording our second album and working on our next music video. Our last music video, for my song Hooking Up With Girls, was a shot by shot remake of Fiona Apple’s “Criminal” music video, but with lesbians, and my first music video, for my song Philadelphia, was an homage to John Waters “Cry Baby” where I played both Johnny Depp and Traci Lords characters from the movie. So the next one’s gonna be epic as well. I’m also currently writing a book for Simon & Schuster about loneliness (but in a fun way). I also cry on the subway a lot.
GO: What’s the driving force behind your work?
LM: Loneliness and connection. I’ve been alone for almost my entire life, so I love trying to connect people through comedy and music and art. I’m never not creating something every second of the day. I should really take way more naps than I do and I know this.
GO: If you could do or be anything for one day, what would you do?
LM: I’d be on The L Word reboot and also have cameos on CMT’s Nashville and I’d have super cute dogs and live near blue water and have the most romantic badass partner ever and own a lot of lace dresses and have very very very long hair. Like longer than I can seem to grow it. And I’d headline music festivals. Oh man, what a nice day!!!
GO: Who are some of your queer lady role models?
LM: I love Kate McKinnon very much. I love Carrie Brownstein. I love Leisha Hailey so much.
GO: Describe yourself in three words.
LM: Funny. Prolific. Romantic.
GO: What music are you listening to right now?
LM: It Was Romance, S/T. I’m working on my second record, so I’m listening to the first one a lot.
Lights, Little Machines. I love Lights so so so much!!!!
Selena, Amor Prohibido. Selena rules everything around me.
