2024 has clearly been the year of Queer Girl Pop Music. Queer women have been giving us unforgettable moments from Chappell Roan’s record breaking crowds at Gov Ball, to Billie Eilish’s LUNCH music video, to Victoria Monét and Teyana Taylor’s BET performance (that I can’t stop watching). Between all the new releases, I’m having trouble deciding my own summer anthem!
This summer has also been filled with an array of emotions from the cosmos. Venus in Cancer occurred on June 16 and had us all feeling a bit sensitive towards the ones we love (just in time for pride month!). Mercury retrograde in Cancer began on August 22, so if there was a moment you considered reaching out to your ex, go ahead and blame the stars, baby.
As queer people, we often look to the stars for guidance just like we do pop music, searching for messages of hope. Relating to our horoscope is like relating to our favorite song – universal confirmation that it’s not just you out there with that feeling.
As summer comes to a close, define your season with these songs from our favorite lesbian, bisexual, and queer musicians. Don’t forget to check your moon and rising sign as well!
Aries (March 21 – April 19)
Toro – Remi Wolf
A passionate Aries is focused on a good time, which is what Remi Wolf sums up on her newest single.
As a fire sign you look for someone daring who boosts your confidence and who isn’t afraid to be hedonistic in the bedroom. Singing about a night in a hotel, Remi sings about her partner “I don’t just like I adore ya” and isn’t shy about “waking up the people down the hall”. This song will have you blushing as you reminisce on your latest hookup and their animalistic qualities.
Taurus (April 20 – May 20)
After Hours – Kehlani
Our strong Taurus needs an anthem about enjoying your summer and getting out of the house- no matter how much you prefer your sanctuary (bed). A Taurus herself, Kehlani knows that it’s about curating a specific vibe with the person you’re into. You are known for being in tune with your sensuality, similar to Kehlani as she entices her partner singing “My home never closes / Just want you to feel free.” Mars, the planet of aspiration, entered Taurus on June 8th, so this summer was likely your era of staying out (after hours) at your local lesbian bar trying hard to get after what you want.
Gemini (May 21 – June 20)
You Need Me Now? Featuring Sabrina Carpenter. – girl in red
Sharp-minded Gemini needs a song that communicates their intellect, making the lead single off girl in red’s sophomore album your match. Geminis are careful with their trust, so you likely relate to the chorus: “Don’t tell me you need me now / I’ve heard it, yeah I’ve heard it before”. The Norwegian artist brought on Sabrina Carpenter and the two joined forces- like the twins in the zodiac- to give us a song about blowing off the advances of an old ex-girlfriend.
Cancer (June 21 – July 22)
Birds of a Feather – Billie Eilish
The soft heart of a Cancer deserves something that communicates the gentle feeling of a relationship, and this hit song from Billie Eilish’s new album delivers that. You may hate the stereotype of being one of the more emotional signs, but you have to admit the line “And I don’t know what I’m crying for / I don’t I think I could love you more” is quite relatable. It’s not only your caring nature, but the expressive way you show love that makes you memorable.
Leo (July 23 – August 22)
Not My Fault – Reneé Rapp and Megan Thee Stallion
Leo’s boldness must be reflected in a pop song that comes from two powerful queer women. The original song from the Mean Girls movie musical is still high on our playlists, especially after the pair performed the song on Saturday Night Live back in January. Leos are used to people being jealous of their confident aura, and you’ve definitely wondered the question Megan starts her verse with: “I mean who wouldn’t wanna be in love with me?”
Virgo (August 23 – September 22)
Good Luck, Babe! – Chappell Roan
The newest song from our midwest princess Chappell Roan is not only a big F-you to comphet, it’s a song with the confidence of someone who feels like they’re one step ahead. Virgo, our resident problem solver, has likely told themselves an iteration of “it’s fine, it’s cool” when dealing with their own issues. You’re envious of Chappell’s way with words, and the advice of “good luck, babe” to someone who did you wrong is the mind-clearing advice you need, releasing your perfectionist need for closure.
Libra (September 23 – October 22)
Juna – Clairo
The newest album Charm from singer-songwriter Clairo is made for Libra’s flirty and enchanting qualities.
The longing exuded on the single Juna displays Clairo openness to a new partner, and the equitable Libra falls head over heels when they think “You know me / I might just know you too” with a partner that brings out the hopeless romantic in them. As a magnetic air sign ruled by Venus, you likely dream of a friends to lovers romance, pulling them under your spell.
Scorpio (October 23 – November 21)
Nasty – Tinashe
The secretive Scoprio represents the sexy summer song by R&B singer Tinashe. A feisty water sign ruled by Pluto, you’ve absolutely looked around in your local lesbian bar wondering: “Is somebody gonna match my freak?”. You’re intuitive and can sense others intentions when first meeting them, always ready to size someone up on the dance floor to scope out your chemistry.
Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21)
Heat – Tove Lo
Fire sign Sagittarius is known for being the life of the party, so you need a summer song that makes you want to dance the night away. During pride month, queer singer Tove Lo came out with her latest EP, a synthpop collaboration with producer SG Lewis. You likely need a partner that can keep up with your flirty energy all summer long, but you know they likely “can’t take the heat.”
Capricorn (December 22 – January 19)
Sorry, Sorry – Towa Bird
I’m giving our grounded Capricorn the latest, soft-hearted single by singer and guitarist Towa Bird. The cautious lyrics of “Your body language tells me just what’s in your head” display your gentle nature towards the ones you love. While you may get a reputation for being cool and even aloof to your romantic interests, you’re secretly a softie at heart.
Aquarius (January 20 – February 18)
Lead Me On – Fletcher
Aquarius is known for being highly intellectual, and lesbian pop singer Fletcher’s newest album is about chasing after your highest self. Lead Me On may sound bittersweet, but it’s about tuning into your intuition and following your gut. The intro states “You were born wild and free /I was made to find you” which resonates with your naturally curious disposition.
Pisces (February 19 – March 20)
Guess featuring Billie Eilish – Charli XCX
Pisces can be elusive and alluring, so this song by two major artists teasing their audience perfectly matches your mysterious side. You’ve likely been told before that people are trying to figure you out, which only fuels your creativity. The latest remix from the Brat album gave us Eilish’s first collaboration in over five years, and the rowdy music video where the pair are dancing around in lingerie still have us drooling over the lyric: “Charli likes boys but she knows I’d hit it.”
