Trump’s Latest Attack On Trans Youth Defies Medical Consensus And Basic Human Dignity

A new executive order seeks to ban life-saving medical treatment for transgender kids and teens.

President Trump signed an executive order Tuesday to restrict access to gender-affirming medical care for transgender and nonbinary (TNB) minors, despite extensive research showing that such care significantly improves mental health and well-being.

The order prohibits federal funding, sponsorship, or support for gender-affirming treatments like puberty blockers and hormones for anyone under 19. It also seeks to eliminate Medicaid, Medicare, Affordable Care Act, and federal employee coverage for this care.

Medical experts, including the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Endocrine Society, have consistently affirmed that gender-affirming treatments reduce rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide among TNB youth. Studies show that access to puberty blockers and hormone therapy can be life-saving, while legal name changes have been linked to lower suicide risk and improved self-esteem.

Despite (emphasis on the spite) this evidence, Trump framed the order as a necessary step to prevent “irreversible decisions,” echoing rhetoric that contradicts mainstream medical consensus. The order also directs federal agencies to withdraw from guidance set by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), a leading organization in trans health care.

The Secretary of Health and Human Services has been given 90 days to review research on gender dysphoria and treatment options. However, many fear the conclusions will not align with existing medical evidence—especially given that the position could soon be filled by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., whose Senate confirmation hearings begin today. Kennedy has previously stated his opposition to gender-affirming care for minors, including the use of puberty blockers and hormone therapy. Agency leaders were told to submit progress reports on implementing the order within 60 days.

Trump’s actions mark a significant rollback of protections for the transgender community, following an order banning transgender people from military service and another restricting legal recognition of gender to male and female.
