Incredible news for queers who love queer media (all of us). The L Word creator Ilene Chaiken and star Jennifer Beals have launched Run-A-Muck, a cross-platform queer media brand that’s set to produce content across film, TV, and live events. While they’re playing their cards close to their chests about specific projects in the works, they did share the names of their business partners: Caroline Joyner, WME’s director of impact and inclusion, and Jenn Smira, a business executive and entrepreneur.
Chaiken, who also worked on The L Word: Generation Q, Empire, and The Handmaid’s Tale, said, “Queerness is no longer peripheral, but central to the creation of culture.” She also emphasized how much things have changed in the entertainment world, adding, “We’ve reached a threshold at which queer artists are dominating the entertainment space, and Run-A-Muck will simply be a media company that connects those creators with consumers who love their work.”
Although she identifies as straight, Beals has seen firsthand how queer culture resonates with everyone, regardless of how they identify. “The media industry is transforming, and the queer community is at the forefront,” she said. “Our mission is to tell the most meaningful, compelling, and entertaining stories that resonate across generations and communities.” She also reflected on the impact of The L Word, saying, “What I learned from The L Word is that when you center queer culture, it gives everyone, regardless of how they identify, permission to be their most authentic selves.”
Though specific announcements are still under wraps, Chaiken hinted that they’re “down the road” with a major business partner, promising exciting things on the horizon. It also seems like there is some serious potential for brands to tap into cultural relevance through Run-A-Muck. “We know that this opportunity for brands is massive,” she added.
Fans are hoping that a queer media outlet will finally put a stop to the trend of untimely cancellations of some of our favorite queer-forward series (A League of Their Own, The L Word: Generation Q, and The Wilds, just to name a few). Chaiken and Beals clearly have big plans for Run-A-Muck, and it’s safe to say the brand will be one to watch as it pushes forward into the world of queer storytelling and entertainment.
