SAGE (Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders) began in 1978 and continues to provide important services for seniors in the queer community, ranging from fun activities like theater and exercise, to important psychological resources like drop-in groups, to services for caregivers. Socialize with friends and maybe even meet someone new while supporting this great cause.
On Feb 16, The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture plays host to Mother Tongue: Monologues for Lesbian Ancestral Wives and Revolutionary Women Speaking the Unspeakable. Lesbian poet Staceyann Chin and filmmaker Aishah Shahidah Simmons are honored in this multimedia benefit performance designed to prevent sexual assault in the African-American community.
It’s been another banner year for positive queer representation in the media, and The 24th Annual GLAAD Media Awards celebrates our progress on Mar 16 with a giant awards ceremony taking place at New York’s elegant Marriott Marquis. This year’s nominees include such mainstream narrative films as Cloud Atlas and Best Exotic Marigold Hotel; acclaimed indie movies like Any Day Now and Mosquita y Mari; TV shows The New Normal, The Real L World and Grey’s Anatomy; documentaries Wish Me Away and How to Survive A Plague; plus Gossip’s album A Joyful Noise.
Tasty treats await you at Savor, a culinary evening benefiting Gay Men’s Health Crisis. This year’s attendees will enjoy a scrumptious four-course dinner made by top chefs Alex Guarnaschelli, Justin Warner, Silvano Fiorindo, and Colleen Grapes. The evening also honors The Keith Haring Foundation and Joy A. Tomchin, producer of the critically-acclaimed AIDS documentary How to Survive a Plague. On Mar 4, Gotham Comedy Club plays host to the 28th Annual Bistro Awards Gala. This high-profile event highlights legends in the New York cabaret, jazz and comedy scenes. Honorees for 2013 include singer-actress Lainie Kazan, alternative theater artist Mx Justin Vivian Bond, and queer comic Alec Mapa, among others. Funnyman Jim David will be the host. Premium ticket holders can attend a star-studded pre-show reception with complimentary food and drink.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Original GLBT Expo, an event that spotlights the very best in LGBT business and entertainment. Browse the many vendors, get some free samples, see a queer film in the video lounge, and watch a live performance on the main stage. Dozens of artists are expected to perform, including singers Lori Michaels and Athena Reich. It’s all happening Mar 9-10 in the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center.
Dance the night away with some of the lesbian community’s leading lights Mar 22 at Winter Heat, an upscale annual women’s party benefitting the Empire State Pride Agenda, which works to preserve equality for all LGBT New Yorkers and their families. This year’s event, co-chaired by Dalloway restaurant co-owner Kim Stolz, will be held at the exclusive Kiss & Fly club in the heart of the trendy Meatpacking District.
