Queer Black Excellence Will Shine At The 2025 Met Gala

Sha'Carri Richardson, Doechii, Janelle Monáe and Ayo Edebiri

This year’s Met Gala, taking place on May 5, celebrates the Costume Institute’s new exhibition, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.

The 2025 Met Gala is set to be a momentous celebration of Black fashion, culture, and creativity—and queer Black women will be at the heart of it all. Among the powerhouse figures on this year’s host committee are musicians Doechii and Janelle Monáe, actress and comedian Ayo Edebiri, and Olympic superstar Sha’Carri Richardson. These women have made waves in their respective fields while challenging norms and redefining Black excellence on their own terms.

This year’s Met Gala, taking place on May 5, celebrates the Costume Institute’s new exhibition, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, a deep dive into the history and cultural significance of Black dandyism. The dress code, fittingly titled “Tailored for You,” invites attendees to embrace the art of menswear-inspired fashion, an aesthetic that has long been used by Black visionaries as both self-expression and resistance.

“Dandyism offered Black people an opportunity to use clothing, gesture, irony, and wit to transform their given identities and imagine new ways of embodying political and social possibilities,” a release from the Met reads.

These four trailblazers have each used fashion as a means of storytelling and empowerment. Janelle Monáe, a longtime champion of androgynous style, has made suiting a signature part of her aesthetic. Doechii, a fearless force in music, blends avant-garde visuals with her genre-defying sound. Ayo Edebiri, fresh off her rise to Hollywood’s A-list, brings an effortless cool to every red carpet she graces. And Sha’Carri Richardson is known for her bold fashion statements—and iconic nails—on and off the track.

Richardson emphasized the importance of fashion as both an art form and a means of storytelling. “Our style isn’t just what we wear — it’s how we move, how we own our space, how we tell our story without saying a word,” she said in a statement. “Fashion sets us apart, but it also brings us together — whether you’re shining on the track, commanding the stage, or just making the streets of New York your runway. On May 5, our light will continue shining on the power of style, and trust me, you don’t wanna miss it.”

They will be in stylish company. This year’s Met Gala co-chairs include out actor Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, and the ever-present Anna Wintour. The host committee features a mix of cultural heavyweights, from queer playwright Jeremy O. Harris to André 3000, Simone Biles, and author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
