Niecy Nash Threw A Bachelorette Party For Robin Roberts

“Could 14-year-old Robin Roberts have imagined she’d be having a bachelorette party on national television?” “Uh-uh, no. Especially to a woman.”

Niecy Nash threw the bachelorette blow-out of the century for Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts and her fiancée, Amber Laign.

Nash and Roberts, both modern queer icons, have a special bond. Roberts was the first to interview Nash after Nash’s secret wedding to her wife Jessica Betts, and Nash has publicly thanked Roberts for being a close friend and confidante during that time in her life.

The theme of the party was Key West. The GMA studio was decorated with palm trees, fake blue skies, and a sand sculpture of a heart with “R + A” written in the center. Niecy pulled out all the stops, including heart-shaped glasses, a green screen road trip to gather all of Robin and Amber’s loved ones, and even a live performance by En Vogue. The whole “I do crew” donned matching button downs with “R + A” patches.

The excitement lasted throughout the morning, with touching moments that highlighted just how special it was to have an elder lesbian bachelorette party on daytime TV. One moment was when Sally-Ann, Robin’s sister, gifted Robin a customized cutting board inscribed with her favorite family recipe.

“You know how much mama is blowing kisses to you right now, and now you have her recipe for rosemary chicken,” Sally-Ann told Robin. “I know you’re going to be in the kitchen, where you always are.” The siblings’ mother, Lucimarian Tolliver Roberts, passed away in 2012.

“I should’ve known when I saw the Kleenex box,” Robin quipped as she wiped away tears, visibly choked up.

When GMA co-host George Stephanopoulos asked Roberts, “Could 14-year-old Robin Roberts have imagined she’d be having a bachelorette party on national television?” she replied, “Uh-uh, no. Especially to a woman.”
