Presumptive Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden previously pledged that he would choose a woman for vice president. Well, one woman is stepping up as tribute: Megan Rapinoe.
The lesbian soccer star interviewed Joe Biden and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, over Instagram Live on Thursday. While Rapinoe previously endorsed Sen. Elizabeth Warren for president, she’s now throwing her support behind Biden.
In the interview, Rapinoe and Biden discussed the coronavirus pandemic, the Trump administration, Biden’s presidential campaign, and how to bring the Democratic party together.
At one point, Rapinoe straight-up offered to be Biden’s running mate. “I don’t want to put you on the spot,” she said. “I think I could still play soccer and do this. But if you need a vice president, I’m just saying I’m available for an interview. We can talk logistics and the details. Put it on your list, no pressure.”
Jill replied, “I would love that! Every young girl in this country is saying ‘Yes, choose her, choose Megan!'”
Biden was also supportive of the idea. He said, “It’s about a team, and you get it. You treat the other teammates with respect.”
The former vice president says he’s been continuing to campaign via Zoom. He has even held virtual fundraisers, including one for the LGBTQ+ community.
Many progressive voters aren’t satisfied with Biden’s centrist platform, causing fear over a split in the Democratic party. There are also unresolved sexual assault allegations against Biden by Tara Reade, a former member of his staff. Rapinoe didn’t broach the topic during her interview, but Biden released a statement the next day, denying the allegations, per CNN.
Rapinoe says her main priority is policy. As an outspoken critic of Trump, she’s using her platform to do everything she can to remove him from office. She explained, “The presidency only lasts for a finite amount of time but the policies will have generational effects.”
