Here’s when and where to watch.

A highly anticipated sapphic short film starring Maya Hawke and Victoria Pedretti finally has a release date.

For over a year, sapphic fans have been wondering where they can watch The Non-Actor, which had its festival premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in February 2025. The 18-minute movie follows Elliot (Pedretti) as she stays with her ex’s new girlfriend (Hawke) while participating in a medical trial for a “recent, unexplained loss of hearing.” The official synopsis vaguely alludes to “an intimate connection [that] sparks between the two women.”

Both Pedretti and Hawke are faves among the queer community due to their respective roles in The Haunting of Bly Manor and Stranger Things. So it’s no surprise that lesbians would be seated for this loose adaptation of writer/director Eliza Callahan’s novel, The Hearing Test.

While there isn’t much information available about the film itself yet—unsurprising, considering it’s an unreleased 18 minute short—we do have confirmation of queerness. Not only is it mentioned in GLAAD’s round up of LGBTQ+ stories at the 2025 Toronto Film Festival, but Letterboxd reviewers who managed to catch it during its festival run also confirmed that these gals are more than just pals.

“you’re telling me i watched the premiere in the same room as the victoria pedretti and victoria pedretti and maya hawke made out? immediately 5 stars,” reads one review.

Of course, many of the current Letterboxd comments are from people itching to get their hands on this gem. “Not having access to this is doing unspeakable & irreparable harm to my mental, physical, and spiritual health,” one person wrote, while another admitted, “haven’t watched this cause it’s nowhere to be found but if it has maya hawke and victoria pedretti yuri then im all here for it.”

And the long wait has finally paid off—The Non-Actor will be available via Mubi starting July 10.
