Maren Morris Opens Up About Her Bisexuality

September 3, 2024

Country singer Maren Morris shared her journey to self-discovery on Sophia Bush's podcast Work in Progress.

Country singer Maren Morris shared her journey to self-discovery on Sophia Bush‘s podcast Work in Progress.

The 34 year old came out to the world in June. “Happy to be the B in LBGTQ+,” she wrote in an Instagram caption. “[H]appy pride.”

Earlier this week, Morris got deeper with One Tree Hill‘s Sophia Bush, who also came out as queer earlier this year in a personal essay for Glamour. Morris said she used Instagram to come out because it was “lighthearted.” Not everything needs to be “a stupid press release or whatever.”

“I was like, I’m just going to put it in like an Instagram caption, like on a tour photo, so like it could literally just look like, oh, here’s where we played last night,” she laughed. “Oh by the way, I’m this letter.”

Morris told Bush she was aware of her sexuality from a young age, but it was difficult for her to pinpoint where her love for women stopped and her physical attraction began.

““It was something I always knew about myself,” she said. “…“From [the] age of eight to now, it’s really hard sometimes for me to delineate my sexual attraction or just my like love of women.”

That was until she collaborated with queer pop band MUNA for her sapphically-suggestive song “Push Me Over,” which came out earlier this month. The bisexual themes of the song were evident, with lyrics like “Necklace rests just so, on your collarbone/Makes me want to know/ How your perfume smells on me later.”

Morris said she didn’t want people to be left wondering about her sexuality when the song came out.

“I just wanted to have everything out there… I think those are things that should be forward-facing for me,” she said. “…My life is so open now, I’m not hiding any portion of myself.”

Morris added she also wants to be able to date whoever she wants without being picked apart by the media.

“…I’m probably going to be dating, you know, out in public. I would like to be able to do that without any sort of like malicious intent from you know, press or bloggers or whatever,” she said.
