Lucy Dacus Confirms Her Relationship With Julien Baker

Dacus hard-launched her “committed relationship” with Baker to The New Yorker while promoting her upcoming album, Forever is a Feeling.
Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker are officially… official. If the joint Halloween costume, regular date nights, and constant on-stage kissing weren’t enough of a hint, Dacus just publicly confirmed their relationship status: “committed.”
In a new profile for The New Yorker ahead of her upcoming fourth solo album, Forever is a Feeling, Dacus discussed her real-life inspirations behind her new music, which include falling in love with Baker. Dacus also revealed that she and Baker have been living together in Los Angeles since last fall, when their band, boygenius, wrapped its first world tour.
Beyond their time as bandmates, Dacus and Baker are longtime friends. The pair had a rom-com-worthy meet cute back in 2016 when Dacus opened for Baker’s solo show in Washington DC. According to Dacus, Baker found her backstage reading Portrait of a Lady by Henry James, and the two immediately hit it off—by the end of the conversation, Dacus tore out a page from her novel to give Baker her email address. When Dacus befriended eventual bandmate Phoebe Bridgers two years later, the trio were immediate best friends, allegedly booking a boygenius tour before they’d even recorded an album.

In 2023, when boygenius released its debut full-length album, The Record, Dacus dedicated the song “We’re in Love” to her friendship with Bridgers and Baker. Then came the band’s national tour, where Dacus and Baker’s on-stage PDA became a frequent source of discussion amongst fans.
However, Dacus and Baker have stayed relatively private about the details of their romantic relationship—with the exception of their song lyrics. Speaking to The New Yorker, Dacus said, “I want to protect what is precious in my life, but also to be honest, and make art that’s true.” Plus, she said, some songs on the upcoming record are too obviously about Baker to ignore. “These songs are about different people,” Dacus told The New Yorker, but when it comes to tracks like “Most Wanted Man in West Tennessee,” a clear reference to Baker’s home state, “What are you gonna do?”
Naturally, fans are already thrilled at the confirmation.
