The buzzy, animated feature will make its world premiere next month.

Prepare yourself: Space princesses are real, and they’re lesbians. Lesbian Space Princess, an animated, offbeat sci-fi comedy, is counting down to launch its world premiere next month at the Berlin Film Festival.

Created and directed by Emma Hough Hobbs and Leela Varghese, Lesbian Space Princess follows an “introverted space princess [who] is forced to leave her home planet on an inter-gay-lactic mission to save her ex-girlfriend from the Straight White Maliens.” Varghese explained to Lotfourteen that on this animated world, “everyone… who is normally a minority is a majority, so they are loud and proud and empowered.”

The Australian feature has already secured distribution in Australia and New Zealand with Umbrella Entertainment. Now, UK-based Blue Finch Films will test the international market when the film is screened in the Panorama section at the Berlin Film Festival. Here’s hoping this sapphic spaceship has enough fuel to make it to a screen near you.

Hobbs and Varghese, along with producer Tom Phillips, said in a statement, “We are over the moon that Lesbian Space Princess is heading to Berlinale… Our small, amazing local team and cast poured so much love and hard work into this project. Having it shown on an international stage at a festival we could only have dreamed of being part of is truly incredible.”

Blue Finch managing director Mike Chapman championed the movie as “an utter joy — not only side splittingly hilarious, but also immensely heart-warming.”

Excitement has been building around the project—South Australia’s first full-length animated feature film—since its Work-in-Progress screening at the Adelaide Film Festival, where it received enthusiastic praise for its bold storytelling and distinctive animation style.

Here are Hobbs and Varghese discussing their inter-gay-lactic achievement with Cinema Australia outside of that screening:

Only one question remains… Can you make popcorn in outer space? (The answer, sadly, is no.)
