After a strong run on the festival circuit, Lesbian Space Princess is officially set to reach American audiences. Cineverse has announced that the animated sci-fi comedy will open in theaters nationwide on October 31, 2025.
The film marks the feature debut of South Australian filmmakers Emma Hough Hobbs and Leela Varghese. It follows Princess Saira, an introverted royal who leaves her sheltered world behind to rescue her bounty-hunter ex-girlfriend from the villainous Straight White Maliens, with the unexpected help of a runaway gay-pop idol. The story blends space adventure with queer romance and comedy, making room for both silliness and sincerity.

Festival audiences have already embraced the film. At the Adelaide Film Festival in 2024, Lesbian Space Princess held four preview screenings that sold out, and it went on to win the Audience Award for Feature Fiction. From there, it picked up the Teddy Award for best queer feature at the Berlin International Film Festival, was named Best Australian Feature at the Sydney Film Festival, and won the Grand Prize at Poland’s Octopus Film Festival. It also screened in Annecy’s Contrechamp section.
The film’s Australian voice cast includes Shabana Azeez, Bernie Van Tiel, Gemma Chua-Tran, Richard Roxburgh, drag performer Kween Kong, and comedy troupe Aunty Donna.

Back when the film made its international debut earlier this year, Hobbs, Varghese, and producer Tom Phillips said: “We are over the moon that Lesbian Space Princess is heading to Berlinale… Our small, amazing local team and cast poured so much love and hard work into this project. Having it shown on an international stage at a festival we could only have dreamed of being part of is truly incredible.”
The U.S. Halloween release positions Lesbian Space Princess as a lighthearted counterpoint to the season’s usual lineup of horror films. For audiences who have been waiting since those first sold-out screenings in Adelaide, its blastoff into cinemas couldn’t be any more welcome.
