After confirming their engagement last week, Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis have shared photos of the proposal on Instagram.

The caption is “September 1, 2023,” indicating the couple had kept their engagement under wraps for over 2 months, though fans spotted Mewis’ ring a few weeks after the proposal.
In an interview with People, Mewis described Kerr as “everything” to her. “My biggest supporter, always listening to me nag and complain all, all of my crazy antics,” Mewis said.
Mewis and Kerr met while playing on opposing teams in the US National Women’s Soccer League. Kerr, who is Australian, is the captain of the national team while Mewis plays for the US. The two sparked rumors of their engagement during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics when photos surfaced of Mewis comforting Kerr after the US beat Australia in the Bronze medal game.
Three days later, the couple became Instagram official with a photo of them kissing and a simple heart emoji caption.

The couple has been long-distance ever since, as Kerr plays for Chelsea F.C. Women in the UK and Mewis plays for NYC/NY Gotham. In a 2022 interview, they revealed how they make it work.
“It is difficult of course just being away from each other but we have FaceTime,” Mewis told GAFFER. “Being in New York is really good because I can kind of just pop over if I get two days off.”
Kerr shared their similar career goals makes it easier. “I think the thing that keeps us going is that we can see an end point. We both just want each other to do so well in our careers. I don’t think you could be in a long distance relationship with someone who didn’t get the sport. She fully gets it and I get it. So we just support each other,” she said.
Mewis also recognized the significance of their relationship being in the public eye. “I think just being out and being two girls in love, I think if we can change one or two people’s lives and the way that they feel about each other and how comfortable they feel, then that means a lot to me,” she said.
She added, “I love to share my relationship on social media. So I think if we can change the way one or two people feel about themselves, they can look at us and see that we’re happy and we’re trying to be as successful as we can and we’re an out gay couple. I think that that’s so important.”
