Jinkx Monsoon Stars In “Oh, Mary!”, Lola Young Announces New Album And Shygirl Comes Out

Your weekly entertainment round-up.
Jinkx Monsoon Takes Over as Mary Todd Lincoln
Monsoon season is coming to the White House! Jinkx Monsoon, Drag Race icon, Queen of all Queens, and Broadway legend in the making, is officially stepping into the role of Mary Todd Lincoln in the Tony-winning Oh, Mary! Monsoon will take over the Lyceum theatre stage starting August 4 and play a limited eight-week stint through September 27.
The actress recently dazzled on the Tonys stage as she performed with the cast of her current show Pirates! The Penzance Musical, which will come to an end on July 27. Needless to say, Monsoon has certainly found her new home on Broadway’s biggest stages. When asked what her biggest dream was by RuPaul during her winning run on Season Five of Drag Race, Monsoon confessed that her goal was to “do drag on Broadway,” and we couldn’t be more proud of her for making those dreams come true.
Lola Young Announces New Album
Lola Young, the queer performer known for her smash hit “Messy” has officially announced a new album and the girls, gays and theys are sat. I’m Only F**king Myself, which Young described as “my ode to self sabotage, my chance to claw myself back from the edge of defeat,” will be released on September 19.
The tracklist has been announced alongside the record, and there are some promising titles—”Post Sex Clarity,” “CAN WE IGNORE IT? :(,“ and “ur an absolute c word (interlude)” are all piquing our interest. Young has been on a festival run following the success of “Messy” and has been shocking listeners with her powerhouse voice and undeniable stage presence. I sense a star in the making!
Shygirl Comes Out As Queer
DJ and rapper, Shygirl, came out in a TikTok after seeing herself included in ‘Queer Artists to Watch’ lists without having ever officially come out. “How did you guys know? Like, I never really came out,” the London-based musician said. “How do they just clock you like that?”
Although she is currently living with her boyfriend in a self-described “technically straight relationship,” she confirmed that she is “definitely queer.” It’s entirely unsurprising that a DJ so good at making club tracks would be queer.
Marissa Bode and Julia Lester to Star in Short Films
Queer actresses Marissa Bode (Wicked) and Julia Lester (Into the Woods) are lending their talents to the short films by Inevitable Foundation’s Visionary Fellowship filmmakers. The Visionary Foundation, which invests in disabled writers and filmmakers so they can “achieve artistic and financial freedom and use film and television to destigmatize disability and mental health globally,” has given its inaugural fellows $55k and access to production help, a crew, health insurance and more.
The shorts will be filmed in Los Angeles with Bode and Lester leading two of the fellowship films. Bode is set to star in “The Hog Queen,” which is set in a small-town Texas gay bar during its Hog Fest Drag Show as all hell breaks loose. Lester will lead “Bewars Cockblocking Ghosts,” which follows a teenage girl who must escape the demonic ghost of her dead best friend. We cannot wait to see how these short films turn out!
The Barden Bellas are All Gay Now
I want you to think back to 2012. Pitch Perfect had just come out, everyone was doing the cup song, a cappella was cool, and lesbians everywhere were reading into the infamous Becca and Chloe shower scene and flirtiness. While we never got the Bechloe storyline we deserved, all these years later the cast, or at least Rebel Wilson and Anna Camp, have revealed that “all the Bellas are gay now! Everyone’s gay.”
While doing press for their new flick Bride Hard, the Pitch Perfect icons opened up about their queerness and the love they feel from the community. Wilson, who has been married to her wife for over a year, shares that the reception to her coming out couldn’t have been better. “I’m just sending love out there to everybody at this important time in history,” Wilson told Pride.
Camp, who came out earlier this year, shared her similar experience of being welcomed and supported by the community and shared how Pitch Perfect helped her open up about her queerness. “I remember on Pitch Perfect 2, a lot of us girls were having a chat in between takes about sexuality. It was such a kind, honest, open chat. It really meant a lot to me that day on set,” Camp said.
Mabel and Honoria Return to Our Screens on The Buccaneers
The Buccaneers are back for Season 2, and you know what that means—everyone’s favorite ball-gown wearing, dramatic in-the-rain kissing, altogether adorable couple, Mable and Honoria, are back! While we didn’t see a lot of them in the dramatic first episode of this season, we did get a swoon-worthy secret slow dance on the roof.
“We’ve become experts at hiding but you don’t have to hide from me,” Mabel, played by Josie Totah, reassured Honoria as the pair swayed. Stay tuned for new episodes every week as we watch how their relationship blossoms. If you can’t wait a week, I suggest looking up the ship on TikTok for some devastating edits.
