#GiveElsaAGirlfriend Goes Viral

Hashtag calling for lesbian romance in "Frozen 2" lighting up Twitter

The hashtag #GiveElsaAGirlfriend has set Twitter aflame this past week. The trend began when 17-year-old Alexis Isabel Moncada tweeted Disney asking them to give Elsa a girlfriend in the second “Frozen” movie, not expected to hit theaters before 2018. The animated children's movie was swept up by the LGBT community when it was released in November 2013, due to its message of self-acceptance and inclusion. Many LGBT fans interpreted the hit song, “Let it Go,” as an anthem for youth seeking self-acceptance.

With such a large LGBT fan base, it's no surprise that #GiveElsaAGirlfriend has gone viral so quickly. Over 10,000 people have tweeted the popular hashtag, along with a statement as to why it would be meaningful for them. @miaafame writes, “#GiveElsaAGirlfriend because 1 in 5 kids are queer, but only 1 in 10 feel safe enough to come out.”  @manvspink used #GiveElsaAGirlfriend to relay his son's suggestion as to who Elsa’s girlfriend should be by posting an adorable photograph of an Elsa barbie holding hands with a Princess Leia barbie. Others posted illustrations demonstrating what that relationship would look like. One thing all these tweets have in common is their unrelenting desire to see a lesbian love story in an animated children's movie on the big screen. Let's hope this campaign is enough to convince Disney!
