Dana Nessel Smooches Wife Before Winning Michigan Attorney General Race

“And for all of you out there that can’t handle the fact that I’m about to become the first openly gay person to hold statewide office…”

We’re still happily reeling from all the incredible, historic, democratic, blue, pink, and rainbow wins from Election Day. We’re in awe of all the strong women who are the new faces of Congress. There were so many beautiful moments to celebrate across America, but I think it’s safe to say that the lesbian internet has decided on a favorite: Democrat Dana Nessel kissing her wife before winning the Michigan Attorney General race.

Nessel became the first gay person to hold statewide office in Michigan, winning a five-way race to become the state’s Attorney General. Before she officially won, she spoke to her supporters on Tuesday at Detroit’s MotorCity Casino Hotel, while also throwing some shade at her critics.

“And for all of you out there that can’t handle the fact that I’m about to become the first openly gay person to hold statewide office…” Nessel said, before following that statement with a big, beautiful kiss on her wife Alanna Maguire. Their son Alex looked on with pride. (The couple has twin sons.)

We at GO consider that kiss a pretty epic moment: an unabashed display of love, pride, accomplishment, and history—not to mention a big F YOU to homophobes.

Nessel was well-liked throughout her campaign. She had union and environmentalist group backing as well as endorsements from the Michigan Association of Police Organizations and the Michigan Professional Firefighters Union. Her website highlights the issues she’s passionate about: civil rights, the environment, labor unions, legalizing cannabis, and many more. Nessel made rainbow history with this win for the attorney general position in Michigan, but that wasn’t her first experience changing the world. She was also a prime figure in the fight for marriage equality.

See her empowering speech below, and the kiss heard ’round the internet at 1:50. We dare you not to tear up. It’s such a beautiful moment.

Congrats Dana Nessel! Keep slaying politics and giving us much needed and appreciated visibility!
