Crazy 8: Our Year in Review

Marriage Equality The battle for same-gender marriage raged on these past months, with Maine voters echoing the 2008 decision of California voters on Proposition 8 and choosing to take away marriage rights that had previously been given to gays and lesbians. On the upside, Vermont, Iowa, New Hampshire and the District of Columbia all passed laws allowing same-gender marriage in the past year. Connecticut and Massachusetts already have formalized gay marriage provisions.

Oprah and Out

After an unprecedented 25-year run as queen of the daytime talk shows, Oprah Winfrey announced she would call it quits at the end of the current TV season. According to some reports, Rosie O’Donnell will take over Oprah’s daytime slot with a new talk show of her own. As for Oprah, she plans to expand her media empire in other directions and to devote more time to her philanthropic work.
