Clairo Shuts Down Fan Who Said She ‘Stopped Pretending to Like Girls’
Why are we still doing biphobia in 2026?
Clairo is shutting down disrespectful claims surrounding her sexuality.
Over the weekend, the musician, whose real name is Claire Cottrill, replied to a fan who wrote, “I kinda respect how Clairo stopped pretending to like girls.”
The insinuation seemed to be that because Clairo has seemingly been in a relationship with a man since 2025, she’s no longer “pretending” to be bisexual—something Clairo herself understandably took offense to.
“Why do I have to prove to everyone who I sleep with?” she asked. “Do you guys want a list or something? Be so for real.”
The original comment was part of a debate going on about comments King Princess—who identifies as a lesbian—has made about occasionally sleeping with men. This launched into a larger debate about policing identities, as well as whether other self-identified lesbian musicians are secretly bisexual, heterosexual, and/or dating men, partly based on vague statements made by King Princess.
Clairo somehow wound up roped into the whole situation, even though she has only ever identified as bisexual.
It’s also not the first time she’s had to defend her sexuality to fans who seem overly invested in policing her identity. In 2022, she took to X to write, “my sexuality has been questioned a lot and i’d really love for it to be understood- i’ve been out as bi for years and it’s confusing to see comments about ‘queerbaiting’ whenever i date/have dated men.”
“i’m not any less bi because of it!” she added. “and that’s all i really gotta say.”
It’s too bad that Clairo has, in fact, continued to have to say more on the subject thanks to people who refuse to simply accept her identity at face value. Fortunately, a lot of her fans also came out to shut the biphobia down on her behalf.
And no, she really doesn’t need to provide a list.
