Roan also shared how the experience became one of her songs.

Chappell Roan is the latest celebrity to take the stage for one of Rosalía’s tour confessions, giving fans a glimpse into the infuriating heartbreak that inspired one of her songs.

Rosalía has been making waves with the “Confessional” segment on her recent tour, frequently inviting celebrities onstage to share personal stories they want to get off their chest. Roan flew in from Missouri to take part, making a surprise appearance during Rosalía’s Oakland show.

“I saw Lola Young’s confession and it reminded me of something a little similar,” Roan said in a video that’s been circulating after the concert. “I was writing with someone and we kind of started to flirt with each other and it kind of got to the point where we were like, ‘Are you flirting? Do you think this? Do you like me?’ And I was like, ‘Well yes, obviously.'”

Roan said she and her mystery writer talked for three months online during the pandemic before finally meeting in person.

“We were just texting. I was sending pictures and stuff,” she recalled. “And I really liked them and I went out to LA to go on a date with them and… we kissed and I was floating. I was just so like, ‘Wow.’ And then I didn’t hear from them for four days.”

When Roan finally checked in to see what was going on, she was hit with an unexpected admission: they had met somebody else.

This new love interest allegedly came into the picture during the four days the two weren’t talking. Whether that’s actually true or not, the more appalling part of the story came after the songwriter was working with another artist.

“They said to this artist—who I was friends with—that they knew they should be sad and care about me, but they don’t,” she said. “And that they don’t know why I’m so upset because it was just casual. And that turned into a song.”

Fans were left debating exactly which song Roan was referring to. Some felt the obvious conclusion based on her wording is that the song “Casual” was written about this experience, while others pointed out the lyrics of “Femininomenon”—”You sent him pictures and playlists and phone sex / He disappeared from the second that you said / ‘Let’s get coffee, let’s meet up’ / I’m so sick of online love”—appear to be a better fit.

At any rate, both the crowd and Rosalía were appalled by the audacity of this person, who Roan says still works with “some other artists you may know” and who claimed “they can turn their emotions on and off like a faucet.”

But if the experience with this callous songwriter inspired either of those tracks, fans can at least be grateful it produced great music—even if they’re still casually furious on Roan’s behalf.
