On Sunday, the New York Liberty made franchise history by winning game 5 in overtime, clinching the organization’s first-ever championship win. The energy was electric (we were there!). From the elder butches who have been with the team from the beginning of the league to the new generation of women’s basketball fans, the win had everyone in tears. Even Ellie the Elephant fell to the ground with emotion. But the party didn’t stop there! Today, the Liberty are being celebrated by the greatest city in the world, and here’s how you can get in on the action.
New York Liberty Parade
The New York Liberty will celebrate their first WNBA championship with a parade on Thursday morning, featuring six floats, four double-decker buses, and 2,500 participants. It will take place along the “Canyon of Heroes” on Broadway between Battery Place and City Hall in Manhattan’s Financial District. The parade begins at 10 a.m. Road closures and mass transit disruptions are expected, and sanitation crews are preparing for post-parade cleanup with over 350 workers. Accessible viewing is available at Zuccotti Park.
Cubbyhole Victory Party
Cubbyhole is partnering with Fitted WNBA and hosting an extended happy hour from 3-7 pm! We’re talking half off beer, well, and wine, plus free pizza and shot specials. Dress to impress for your chance to be photographed by Fitted WNBA (who has been featured in Vogue) and win merch, a bar tab, and more for the best dressed and the most *fan*atical. Plus, we’re celebrating the lesbian icon and rising star Malea Kennedy who kicked on the Game 5 win by belting out the national anthem.
Celebration at Barclays Center
Tickets might be sold out, but keep your eye on Ticketmaster to score tickets to Barclays Center’s celebration happening from 7-10 pm. New York Liberty players, as well as their iconic mascot, Ellie the Elephant, will be there for the party. You won’t want to miss special performances by New York native rappers Remy Ma and Fat Joe.
Light it up, New York!
