A misconduct hearing found the officer had harassed his lesbian colleagues with discriminatory and sexually inappropriate comments.

A British police officer has been fired after making inappropriate and sexually intrusive remarks to his lesbian colleagues, despite multiple warnings to stop. The misconduct hearing concluded that PC Tom Hamer’s actions constituted gross misconduct, leading to his immediate dismissal from the Hertfordshire Police force, just outside London.

PC Hamer, 24 at the time of the incidents, asked junior female colleagues invasive questions about their personal lives between December 2023 and February 2024. His comments included explicit questions about sex and remarks about a colleague’s gender identity.

The misconduct hearing detailed several incidents in which Hamer displayed inappropriate behavior:

  • December 10, 2023: Hamer asked a younger and less experienced officer, “Is the child feeling better now he has eaten.”
  • Late December 2023: He referred to a gay female colleague as a “manwoman.”
  • February 2, 2024: Hamer asked a gay female colleague a sexually explicit question.
  • February 2024: On a separate occasion, he made further inquiries about a gay female colleague’s sex life.

Hamer admitted to making these comments but disputed that some of them breached standards.

Chief Constable Andy Prophet found the term “manwoman” to be “inherently discriminatory [and] highly inappropriate,” stating it would not have been used if the colleague were not a gay woman, according to the BBC. He emphasized that such behavior is “entirely unacceptable for police officers” as it undermines public trust and confidence in policing. Hamer’s actions were found to have breached standards of professional behavior relating to respect and courtesy, equality and diversity, and discreditable conduct. Consequently, Hamer was dismissed from the force without notice.

Hertfordshire Police have reiterated their commitment to enforcing professional standards and ensuring an inclusive working environment. Following Hamer’s dismissal, the department reaffirmed its stance on equality and diversity policies, emphasizing that discriminatory behavior will not be tolerated.
