The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo has found its director—Anna Kendrick.

Deadline broke the latest news about this highly anticipated adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s popular novel on Monday. The project has undergone several iterations since it was first announced. At one point, it was slated to become a Freeform series with Ilene Chaiken and Jennifer Beals attached to produce. In 2022, the rights were acquired by Netflix, and both Maggie Betts and Leslye Headland were attached at some point to direct.

Currently, the film will be produced by Liza Chasin at 3Dot Productions, Brad Mendelsohn from Circle Management + Productions, and David Hinojosa. Kendrick will be directing from a script penned by Liz Tigelaar (Life Unexpected, Little Fires Everywhere) with current revisions by Francesca Sloan (Mr. & Mrs. Smith). Reid herself will also serve as an executive producer.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo follows an aging Hollywood star who recounts her life story to a young journalist. It’s garnered a deeply devoted queer fanbase thanks to the sapphic turn the story takes.

Kendrick herself has a pretty devoted queer following, due in no small part to her acting roles in Pitch Perfect and A Simple Favor. She’s also proven herself as a director with Woman of the Hour, released by Netflix in 2024.

Moreover, she’s also made it clear that she has an appreciation for fans craving queer representation in film, repeatedly acknowledging the rabid enthusiasm for the non-canon fan favorite ship of Beca and Chloe (the characters portrayed by her and Brittany Snow, respectively) in the Pitch Perfect franchise.

“It meant so much to us that there was this following around their latent relationship and, yeah, I thought it would’ve been really cool if it would have ended up coming to fruition in the end,” she told Pride Source in 2018. “If we ever do a [fourth film], I will fight tooth and nail for it.”

Fans of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo remain both excited and anxious about the upcoming adaptation, but Kendrick’s involvement has definitely drawn a lot of folks towards optimism.

“i had completely lost hope in this movie but now you got my attention,” one person wrote on X.

Although no casting news has yet been announced, fans have already been throwing around names of actors they would love to see playing Evelyn Hugo and Celia St. James.

With the adaptation already having been in development for some time now, let’s hope Kendrick coming on as director means The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is finally coming to fruition.
