The Nominees For The 34th Annual GLAAD Media Awards Have Been Announced

2022 was a big year for queer women representation in movies.

The nominees for the 34th GLAAD Media Awards have been announced. 2022 was a great year for queer representation in media, and the stiff competition in each category is proof.

RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 15 stars Sasha Colby and Salina EsTitties starred in a spoof of Drag Story Hour called “GLAAD’S Drag Story Time” to announce the nominees who demonstrated exceptional representation of the LGBTQ+ community. But first the queens highlighted the recent attacks on drag shows, specifically drag story hour, “Performers like us are being threatened with anti-LGBTQ bills, nasty protests, and even violence. You know what’s scary? People with guns, not queens with books!” said Colby.

The representation of trans and non-binary characters has been growing every year. This year, seventeen of the 30 nominated TV shows feature transgender/nonbinary characters, including “A League of Their Own,” “Sort Of” and “Grey’s Anatomy.” Similarly, 6 of the ten video games nominated in the video game category featured transgender/nonbinary characters, including “Apex Legends” and “Need for Speed: Unbound.”

2022 was also a big year for queer women representation in movies. Of the 10 wide-release film nominees, six featured prominent lesbian, bisexual or other queer women characters, including “Tár,” “Bodies Bodies Bodies” and “Scream.” Fan-favorite “A League Of Their Own” is nominated for Outstanding New TV Series, and forever-obsession “The L Word: Generation Q” has been nominated for Outstanding Drama Series.

The GLAAD Media Awards includes a non-competitive Special Recognition category for projects that do not quite fit in a category but deserve to be acknowledged. This year, “The Lesbian Bar Project” was recognized along with Drag Story Hour, #Letters4TransKids, Jerrod Carmichael’s HBO stand-up special “Rothaniel”, and Alejandra Caraballo, a lawyer and prominent leader for LGBTQ+ civil rights.

Winners will be revealed in two separate ceremonies; the first will be held on Thursday, March 30 at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, and the second is slated for Saturday, May 13 at the Hilton Midtown in New York City. Best of luck to all of the nominees!
