100 WOMEN WE LOVE 2008

Hats off to the 100 Women We Love, class of 2008 (in no particular order, ’cause we love ’em all!).

Shira

In 2004, the lesbian punk band Shiragirl crashed the Warped Tour, driving its pink RV right up to one of the skate ramps and creating their own stage. “Instead of getting kicked out, we were invited to join the tour,” says founder and frontwoman, Shira. That summer, she convinced the organizers of the traveling alternative music festival to develop an all-girl stage, which featured more than 100 unsigned, female-fronted bands. MTV took notice, giving Shiragirl a Warpie Award for the “most punk rock way to win a place in the in family.” It’s that kind of chutzpah that has fueled the band’s politically-charged lyrics. Shira recently created Play-A-Girrl Produc-tions, an events and recording company designed to promote female musicians. Her band is set to release a new CD in the fall, and a sample will hit the streets this summer. –LL
