The Very Best of NYC Theater

February 10, 2015

,

Broadway, Off-Broadway and much more!

Presented by Brooklyn’s Everyday Inferno Theatre Company, written by Laura Hirschberg, directed by Anais Koivisto, Heart of Oak makes its world premiere Feb 20 as part of the FRIGID New York festival. In this lively production, Princess Alvida flees an arranged marriage, commandeers a pirate ship and assembles an unlikely female crew. Don’t miss this theatrical tale of love on the high seas; it’s playing thru Mar 6 at The Kraine Theater in the East Village!

Also in late February, Women’s Project Theater presents an exciting new play, Bright Half Life, written by Pulitzer Prize nominee Tanya Barfield and directed by Tony nominee Leigh Silverman. Rebecca Henderson and Rachael Holmes star in this brilliant and kaleidoscopic story about how two women’s lives collide, rewind, pause and fast forward. And hurry! It’s at New York City Center Stage II in a limited engagement only thru Mar 22.

Undoubtedly, we all loved Neil Patrick Harris and Michael C. Hall in Hedwig and the Angry Inch at the Belasco Theater. Since mid-January, their successor, John Cameron Mitchell—who also co-wrote it!—has taken over the lead role. He’s performing until Mar 14, so get thee to this smash-hit musical comedy about a fictional glam rock band fronted by an East German transgender singer.

He’s just a Poe boy, nobody loves him! But Goths have been rejoicing in Nevermore—The Imaginary Life and Mysterious Death of Edgar Allan Poe, a “beautiful and bizarre, playful and perverse” musical production that tells the life story of the tormented and brilliantly imaginative 19th century poet, author of “The Raven”. It opened Jan 19 and will be sticking around for a few months (yay!) with performances thru the end of May.

The Broadway smash hit, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, written by Simon Stephens (based on Mark Haddon’s 2003 young adult novel), is still going strong and should be on your list of must-sees. The play tells the story of Christopher, a 15-year-old boy genius falsely accused of killing his neighbor’s dog. As he tries to clear his name, he makes an earth-shattering discovery and sets out on a life-altering journey. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is at the Barrymore Theater with performances thru Sep 6.
