Tim Curry, Charismatic ‘Rocky Horror Picture’ Star, Dead at 80
He had faced health problems since a stroke in 2012.
The Emmy-winning prolific British stage and film actor Tim Curry has died at age 80.
Curry was known for his standout roles from The Rocky Horror Picture Show to Clue.
In 2012, Curry suffered a stroke that left him unable to walk. He’d had health problems since.
Tabloid TMZ reports that Curry died at his home in Los Angeles.
Born on April 19, 1946, in the United Kingdom, Curry had an extensive stage acting career beginning while studying in England before roles on London’s West End and later Broadway.
Curry took on the gender fluid, very queer-coded mad scientist Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Show when it opened on the stage in London in 1973. He performed it for two years — including in New York and in Los Angeles.
Two years later, he starred in the film adaptation The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Throughout his life, Curry received three Tony Award nominations and two Laurence Olivier Award nominations for his stage work.
He also appeared in the 1982 film adaptation of Annie, Home Alone 2, and Muppet Treasure Island. Curry played the sinister clown Pennywise in the cult TV adaptation of Stephen King’s It.
Throughout his acting career, Curry was also known for his voiceover work. He won a Daytime Emmy in 199s for Peter Pan and the Pirates.
In 2015, Curry received the lifetime achievement award at the Actors Fund Tony Awards Viewing Party, according to People.
