Ryan Murphy Is Threatening To Reboot ‘Glee’
No one tell Lea Michele.
Glee co-creator Ryan Murphy is once again teasing the possibility of reviving the series.
Speaking with People during the premiere of his new series, The Shards, the conversation turned to Glee.
“That show is interesting because it’s come back around,” he said. “So many young people now watch it. And I’m like, ‘Maybe we should revisit that show.'”
Glee, which followed a bunch of misfit high schoolers singing and dancing their way through an over-the-top existence, had an absolute chokehold on the culture during its initial 2009 to 2015 run. And as Murphy alluded to, it still does. The pure insanity of the storylines, audacious dialogue, and baffling (but deeply entertaining) music choices have made it perfect fodder for TikTok clips and reaction gifs. This, of course, led to new fans regularly discovering it on streaming and original fans unable to escape its grasp.
“My nostalgia and love for that show is enough that I’m like, ‘Well, maybe people would like to see a new incarnation of that in some capacity.’ So yeah, I love that show, and I loved what it became and what it meant to so many people,'” Murphy continued.
This is far from the first time Murphy has discussed the possibility of bringing Glee back. Just a few years after the show ended, the prolific TV creator was already publicly musing about what a version that starred Ben Platt and Beanie Feldstein might look like. A couple years after that, Murphy was floating the idea of a Broadway musical version of Glee.
“Maybe we should really re-examine it as a brand,” he said at the time. “You know, should we do a reboot of it in some way? Should we do a Broadway musical of it in some way? Like, it’s sort of an interesting legacy that I’m interested in doing in a positive way after sort of pausing for a while.”
Murphy certainly has his plate full with all the other series he’s constantly juggling, but perhaps a return to Glee is what the culture needs. Or, if he’s in the mood to revive things, maybe we can just finally get a new season of Scream Queens.
