Well it’s official… love is dead. Olympic gold medalists and everyone’s favorite sporty lesbians, Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe have announced their separation after being together for nearly a decade.
In a joint statement via Instagram, the couple wrote, “This hasn’t been an easy decision, but it’s one we’ve made together, with so much love, respect, and care for each other. We’ve shared a whole life over the last decade, through big moments and in quiet ones, and that is something we’ll always carry with us.”
The pair met at a photoshoot for the 2016 Rio Olympics, where Bird earned her fourth gold medal with the USA Women’s Basketball team, and Rapinoe and the USA Women’s Soccer team earned fifth place. But Rapinoe still won Bird’s heart. Bird later came out publicly in 2017 and announced that Rapinoe was her girlfriend.
In 2020, the couple shared their engagement and continued to win gold medals and world cups, while becoming a true power couple for queer fans worldwide.
Along with their now-broken engagement, the couple announced that their popular joint podcast, “A Touch More,” will be ending. “While this chapter of doing the podcast together is ending, what we’ve built with you isn’t,” the statement read.
For so many young queer fans around the world, Rapinoe and Bird offered inspiration for success while loving out loud. While it is devastating to see their relationship come to an end, their impact will never be forgotten.
“Thank you for being with us through all of it…it means the world to us. With so much love, Megan and Sue.”
