Emmy Nominations Are In And They’re Gayer Than Ever

Emmy Awards

Queer actors racked up the nominations for this year’s Emmy Awards.

The nominations for the 77th Emmy Awards have been announced, and queer actors are showing out. This television year was full of queer women both within fictional storylines and the actors themselves, and we couldn’t be happier that they are getting their flowers.

Here are the wins, shocks, and snubs for queer women within this year’s Emmy Award nominations.

Ayo Edebiri

Queer actor, comedian, and director Ayo Edebiri has made history two times over with her Emmy nominations. Picking up nominations for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her work in The Bear as well as a nomination for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series for the episode “Napkins,” Edebiri has become the second woman in history to be nominated for acting and directing in the comedy categories in the same year.

Edebiri has also become the youngest black woman in Emmys history to receive three acting nominations. It’s times like these that we should all be lucky that out of all the time periods to live through, we got to live at the same time as the one and only Ayo Edebiri.

‘Hacks’ Cast

It is truly unsurprising for any fan of comedy series Hacks that the most recent season garnered 14 nominations for this year’s award show. Among the two cast and crew nominated were new-age queer icon Hannah Einbinder for Outstanding Supporting Actress and Robby Hoffman for Outstanding Guest Actress.

Jean Smart and Julianne Nicholson also garnered nominations for their acting on the show, reminding us once again of the insane talent that this show is packed with. Our fingers are crossed that Smart and Einbinder will finally win matching Emmys this year.

Bella Ramsey

The Last of Us picked up a whopping 16 nominations after a relatively mixed-reviewed season. Bella Ramsey snagged their incredibly well-earned second Emmy nomination for their work as Ellie. At only 21 years old, there is no denying that Ramsey is an acting force to be reckoned with.

The List Goes On…

Cynthia Erivo picked up an Outstanding Guest Actress nomination for her portrayal of numerous characters in Poker Face. Only an icon like her could get an Emmy and Oscar nomination in the same year. Cherry Jones picked up a nomination for her work in The Handmaid’s Tale, and Erin Doherty got nominated for her role in Adolescence. Even Kristen Kish, lesbian host of Top Chef, got a nomination and will go head-to-head with RuPaul for the award.

Snubs

Despite the much-talked-about season, everyone’s favorite lesbian-cannibal show, Yellowjackets, received zero nominations. It’s hard to know why this show is consistently overlooked, but maybe this season’s snub can be blamed on adult Melissa’s snapback reveal.

While Kathryn Hahn, the honorary lesbian of this television season, received a nomination for The Studio, she received nothing for the new queer-classic Agatha All Along.

Despite the snubs, this year’s Emmys are shaping up to be gayer than ever, and we can’t wait.
