Katy O’Brian has been on a massively upward trajectory over the last few years, going from bit parts in popular TV shows to stealing every scene in our favorite movies and streaming series. She’s also on social media less frequently than a lot of modern-day celebs, leaving fans looking to interviews and red carpet appearances for updates.
Fortunately for sapphics everywhere, the Love Lies Bleeding star recently stopped by David Dastmalchian’s Grave Conversations to take a walk on the morbid side of life (and death), revealing a handful of fun facts about herself along the way. Reminding us why we love the actress to death.
1. She wants to be eaten.
Not everyone likes to think about what’s going to happen to their body when they die, but it’s a conversation that must come to pass on Grave Encounters, where the chats take place in coffins and death is a major topic.
“I think I would like to be cremated and turned into something,” O’Brian said.
When Dastmalchian asked if she meant something like a diamond, the Queens of the Dead actress acknowledged that she actually had something a little more devious in mind.
“No. Maybe something edible,” she suggested. “I’m a big fan of pranks, and I think it’d be great to sneak me into people’s foods, supplements. Live on through them.”
2. She has a different kind of project in the works.
O’Brian has been married to her wife Kylie Chi since 2020, and they’re currently looking to expand their family.
“I have a project I’m trying to produce that I think is very lovely and fun and interesting and unique. We’re doing family planning. We’re actually very close to hopefully, hopefully getting a baby in my wife,” she said, adding: “I’ve done nothing to contribute.”
3. She’s allergic to cats.
Despite her allergy, O’Brian says she has two cats, keeping that stereotype of queer cat-loving alive and well.
“I would say once you start to get past three, we’re getting to the territory of what does your house smell like? How many litter boxes do you have? Where do you put them? What are we doing?” she joked.
4. She daydreams constantly.
Joking that she probably has “maladaptive daydreaming,” O’Brian also acknowledged that daydreaming has its benefits when it comes to working in entertainment.
“I’m always creating worlds. And I grew up reading all the time. When you’re reading, even moreso than watching a show, you’re creating a world in your head, because you have the words but not the visuals,” she explained. “I think that, to be in this industry, you have to be a little bit delusional.”
5. She’s not a fan of AI.
When asked by Dastmalchian which piece of technology she “fears the most,” O’Brian didn’t hesitate in responding with something a lot of people can relate to these days.
“I think AI in general is pretty scary,” she said. “Not only what it’s doing to people psychologically who treat it as a therapist or a friend, but the damage that it does to the environment is, I think, irreversible if we keep going on the route that we’re going.”
6. She wore original Star Wars costumes in The Mandalorian.
“The first season I was in in The Mandalorian, it was like, original costumes from the ’70s or ’80s. It was like, O.G. costumes. They did not have extras, actually, so. They were extremely itchy. You couldn’t move very much, and I felt like if I did, I would rip it, and then I would be fired,” she admitted. “Then you just wonder about what sweaty person was in them 30 or 40 years ago.”
Still, how cool is that?
7. She’s working on a book
“I’m not sure if I’m supposed to say anything,” she said. “I’m more excited to get it done than I am about anything else in the world. It’s been such a weight on my shoulders for so long. It’s very photo-heavy, and it’s the first time I’m having to plan a whole shoot and figure out where to do it and all this stuff. It’s been so much more stressful than if I were able to just sit down and write.”
The lack of details definitely has us curious to learn more, but all in due time!
As fun as these assorted facts about O’Brian are, the two also dived deeper into her experiences working in Hollywood, opinions on Big Bird, and, of course, thoughts on death in the full episode. If you’re a fan of O’Brian, Dastmalchian, and/or interviews that go a little deeper and darker than your average Q&A, it’s definitely worth the watch.
