Some ‘House of Dragon’ Fans Are Heated Over Steamy Queer Kiss
While the kiss felt right for the actors, and many long-time fans, some angry viewers have begun review-bombing the episode.
House of Dragon‘s second season has been well-received by many fans, but a recent episode has led to controversy with some viewers.
Episode six of the Game of Thrones spin-off, titled “Smallfolk”, dropped Sunday, and showed off a long-awaited steamy queer moment. Queen Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and Mysaria (Sonoya Mizuno) shared a kiss, which the actors have since revealed was unscripted.
The episode shows Mysaria and Rhaenyra opening up to each other about their traumatic pasts after their plan to assist starving citizens is a success. The emotional moment led to a lingering hug between the two, and eventually transitioned into a heated kiss.
Mizuno said the kiss just felt “organic” between the characters.
“I think it was the hug — the intimate vulnerability of that hug — which morphed into this very tender and passionate kiss, which was quite … amazing,” Mizuno told TheWrap. “I think it’s very thrilling in the moment for both of them.”
While the kiss felt right for the actors, and many long-time fans, some angry viewers have begun review-bombing the episode by rating it 1 out of 10 stars on IMDB. As of Wednesday, the episode has over 11,000 one-star ratings, which make up 35.8% of the reviews. Ten-star ratings make up the second-highest percentage with 23% or 7,000 reviews.
While some negative reviews complain about the series being slow, many include anti-LGBTQ comments.
“Supporting hidden agendas and messages has gone too far,” complained a one-star reviewer. “I understand that TV shows play an important role in delivering messages to viewers with the intention of changing perceptions about certain groups and accepting other communities, but they should not be imposed.”
“Rhaenyra and the other gal suddenly getting it on??” another reviewer commented. “PLEASE stop with the addition of nonsense that makes no sense.”
“Scenes like this are promoted by international platforms in order to pass this idea on and make it seem normal and unproblematic,” said one commenter. “By including such scenes, they risk alienating a significant portion of their viewership.”
On the other hand, plenty of fans celebrated the kiss on X, and said the “perfect” moment had been building for weeks.
This kiss scene was perfect. Mysaria has been in Rhaenyra’s corner since Rhaenyra took a chance on her. They are two women who have been undermined by men for so long, finding comfort & support in each other. I love everything about this scene. #HouseOfTheDragon pic.twitter.com/QR7RP0D1WR

I don’t wanna hear any “that kiss was unnecessary” “it came out of nowhere” because they’ve been priming this for WEEKS. Sapphics spelled it all out but y’all called us all kinds of crazy. At this point, just say you’re homophobic and go #HouseOfTheDragon pic.twitter.com/Hb7pP1FFOK

The season will continue with two more episodes and is currently available to watch on HBO and Max.
