The first public opinion poll of 2013 reveals growing support for marriage equality among registered voters of both parties.
The survey of 800 registered voters, conducted by Anzalone Liszt Grove Research for the Respect for Marriage Coalition, found that 75 percent of respondents believe marriage is a constitutional right, a 4 percent increase from 2011. Ninety-one percent of Democrats, 75 percent of Independents and 56 percent of Republican voters all believe the freedom to marry the person you love is a fundamental right.
Additionally, 83 percent believe marriage for same-sex couples will become legal nationwide within 5 to 10 years.
Supporters and opponents of marriage equality “do not feel that allowing same-sex couples to marry will have much of an impact on them personally—62 percent believe it will either have not much impact or absolutely no impact at all, and the vast majority of these voters (44 percent of the electorate) believe it will have absolutely no impact on their lives either way,” the polling firm reported in a memo to the coalition.
