Line of Descent and the Kirov Ballet...

-DANCE-

What do we become when we grow up inheriting a story of trauma? This penetrating question is at the core of Line of Descent, a dance-theater piece created by acclaimed New York choreographer Aviva Geismar, to an original score by Canadian composer Annabelle Chvostek. Geismar grounds this powerful work in interviews with immigrants and survivors of both political and ethnic violence. From these powerful first-hand narratives, recollections by their children and grandchildren and her own family’s history as Holocaust victims, Geismar explores how the unconscious legacy of trauma pervades relationships—to others, to the world, to oneself.

The world renowned Kirov Ballet, also known as Ballet Company of the Mariinsky Theatre of St. Petersburg, Russia, returns to New York for a three-week engagement, Apr 1–20, at New York City Center. The 200-year-old Russian company performs a wide range of works by the choreographers and artists who have made the Kirov one of the world’s greatest ballet companies, as well as works by contemporary dance makers. The company’s rich classical repertoire includes works by Marius Petipa, Michel Fokine and George Balanchine, and more modern works by William Forsythe.
