War Lesbian, a New Original Musical, Premieres at Dixon Place

Erin Markey stars alongside an amazing cast in this exciting musical based on an Inuit myth.

We are beyond thrilled about the world premiere of a new original musical, War Lesbian, in a limited run at Dixon Place (161 Chrystie St) on Friday, December 5! War Lesbian—with book by Kristine Haruna Lee and music by Kathryn Hathaway—features Erin Markey alongside an amazing cast, directed by Jordan Fein and produced in association with Joel Glassman.

War Lesbian is based on an Inuit myth about a woman whose family rejects her for being different. She then “embarks upon a journey creating wars with others and within herself,” according to a press release about the production. “Womanhood floods the stage with impossible probabilities, ridiculous heartbreak, and absurdity in which anything, and that means anything, goes. The musical is set in a universe where Ellen DeGeneres is a demonic demi-god, and digging for truths and covering up holes can cause wars.” Ellen as a twisted evil demon? We’re so there! That alone is worth seeing.

In addition to Erin Markey, the cast includes Jessica Almasy, Kristine Haruna Lee, Preston Martin, Stephanie A. Hsu, Sophia Tranor, Chris Tyler, Derek Smith, Andrew R. Butler, Cyndi Perzcek, and Amir Wachterman. Sets are by Amy Rubin with lighting by Sarah Lurie, costumes by Karen Boyer and sound by Steve Arnoczy. Musical direction is by Solomon Hoffman.

There are only seven performances of War Lesbian at Dixon Place on December 5-6, 12-13 and 1920, including two shows on the last night, December 20. Tickets are $16 in advance at dixonplace.org, $18 at the door, and $12 for seniors and students. Get your tickets now!
