Taking Back #NationalGirlfriendsDay: 6 Lesbian Couples We Love

To commemorate, we’ve made a list of six girlfriends (and wives!) we love.

Today is National Girlfriends Day, a day for straight women to celebrate their friendships and confuse queer women with their terminology. This year, we’re taking Girlfriends Day back! To commemorate, we’ve made a list of six girlfriends (and wives!) we love.

1. Wanda Sykes and Alex Sykes

In the internet age, it is truly impressive to keep a low profile—especially when you’re married to a mega-celeb like Wanda Sykes! We may not know much about Alex Sykes, other than that she and Wanda got married in 2008 and had twins in 2009, but their ability to live privately and love publicly makes them amazing.

2. Sarah Paulson and Holland Taylor

Holland Taylor and Sarah Paulson may not be the most outspoken couples in the world, but they are for sure one of the sweetest. They started dating in 2015 and announced their love to the world in early 2016, and they’re still going strong! It may not sound like much, but in the lesbian Hollywood dating scene, that’s practically a lifetime.

3. Rhea Butcher and Cameron Esposito

The creators and stars of Take My Wife on Seeso, Cameron Esposito and Rhea Butcher are the comedic dynamic duo we’ve always dreamed of. Finally, a hilarious gay love story where no lesbians die!

4. Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi

Ellen DeGeneres has been the unofficial LGBT ambassador to mainstream media for decades now, and it helps that her relationship with her wife Portia de Rossi is so freaking cute! They’re one of the most recognizable lesbian couples in America, and with the return of Arrested Development, hopefully we get to see even more of them soon!

5. Ellen Page and Emma Portner

Ellen Page has been a queer lady fave since Juno (2007) and Whip It (2009), and her powerful coming out in 2014 only sweetened the deal. Then, just two weeks ago, Page and her girlfriend, dancer/choreographer Emma Portner, captured our hearts with the most adorable cover of Britney Spears’ “Lucky” ever!

6. Samira Wiley and Lauren Morelli

Writing for Orange Is The New Black helped Lauren Morelli realize she’s a lesbian—and meet the love of her life! She and the show’s breakout star Samira Wiley started dating in 2014 and married earlier this year. It’s a modern-day fairytale.
