Zohran Mamdani Announces Protection Plan For LGBTQ+ New Yorkers

NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani is ranking second in the polls, behind former Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
Following a Trans Community Town Hall with activist Ceyenne Doroshow, NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani has released his plan to keep LGBTQ+ New Yorkers safe.
Here are the three proposals he posted to his social media:
- Expanding and protecting gender-affirming care citywide – Zohran proposed an immediate investment of $65M in public providers for medical treatment and promised to keep hospitals accountable.
- Making NYC an LGBTQIA+ sanctuary city – The mayoral candidate promised to “strengthen and uphold the rights of queer and trans New Yorkers through multiple sanctuary protections.”
- Creating the Office of LGBTQIA+ Affairs – Zohran noted that while Eric Adams left one person to manage LGBTQIA+ city programs, his wish is to “expand and centralize the services, programs, and support LGBTQIA+ New Yorkers need across housing, employment & more.”

A recent Marist poll found former NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who resigned from his position in 2021 after being accused of sexually harassing multiple women and allegedly attempting to retaliate against one of them, in the lead. According to the poll, 37% of Democrats who are “likely” to vote in the primary election say Cuomo is their first choice. Zohran came second at a wide margin, with 18%. The primary is set for June 24.
