Trump’s Lesbian Niece Teams Up with Out Rep. Becca Balint on How to Give Voters Hope: Video
Mary Trump and Rep. Becca Balint say Democrats need to make clear their political plans leading up to the midterms and beyond.
President Donald Trump’s lesbian niece, Mary Trump, stopped by Capitol Hill earlier this week and recorded a video with out U.S. Rep. Becca Balint, a Democrat from Vermont.
The progressive podcaster and writer recorded the video with the congresswoman about the need to understand voters who voted for the president in the last election, with the two saying Democrats need to have effective messaging to connect with more voters and better explain the party’s platform.
“We are talking about how do we rally people in this moment. How do we make sure people understand the stakes of the moment that we’re in, but also how we give them hope,” Balint says in the video.
Mary Trump responds, “I think part of that is by having leaders like [Balint] who are willing to have the really difficult conversations … challenging assumptions, and making it clear that Democrats, when we get back into power, are going to make real, foundational changes to the way we do things so we don’t have to live under the threat of fascism anymore.”
Balint shared the video long with the American Humanist Association and the Freedom From Religion Foundation.
The two also spoke about “getting curious.”
“The other thing you said that really touched me is you talked about the importance of really getting curious – getting curious about why people voted the way that they did, why people, you know, made the decisions that they did in terms of supporting this president, and how they actually can change their minds, and it doesn’t mean that they are bad people. It doesn’t mean that they are stupid people. People make decisions for all kinds of reasons, and we have to understand what motivates them so that we can really address their concerns,” says Balint.
Mary Trump then says that many people have been “lied to by people they trust for years” and those in Congress have an obligation to tell the truth.
Balint wasn’t the only fan of Mary Trump’s on Capitol Hill. Maryland Democrat U.S. Rep. Jamie Raskin also praised her on Tuesday.
“She goes to show that nobody from any family is irredeemable,” he told Meidas Touch in an interview. “She has been such a stalwart in the resistance and opposition to her uncle. And she’s a therapist, and she takes very seriously human psychology and liberating people’s creative faculties, and it just makes me really happy every time I get to see Mary Trump. I love her, and she gives me a lot of faith in the future of humanity.”
